Ancient villages in Tavarnelle Val di PesaSAN DONATO IN POGGIO
San Donato in Poggio, in the municipality of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, is of Roman origin: it was a military "castrum" defending the road that crossed the hills of the Val di Pesa and connected Siena to the Florentine countryside. During the Middle Ages San Donato became a fortified village with the typical elliptical shape. San Donato was involved in the struggle between Guelphs and Ghibellines and destroyed several times during the war between Florence and Siena.
