Barberino Val d'ElsaBarberino Val d’Elsa is a typical fortified medieval village in the province of Florence, partly still surrounded by the ancient walls and towers dating back to the 13th century. Porta Fiorentina (the gate towards Florence) on the north and Porta Senese (the one towards Siena) on the south, both dating back to the 14th century, are still to be admired.
Inside the walls there are tower houses, narrow streets, the long Via Francesco da Barberino connecting the two gates, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Spedale dei Pellegrini, built in 1365 by Taddeo di Cecco da Barberino, and the Parish Church of San Bartolomeo.
Within easy reach of Barberino Val d’Elsa lay many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.
Marcialla, Olena, Cortine, Monsanto and Petrognano-Semifonte are the most important ancient villages in the neighbourhood of Barberino Val d’Elsa.
Several ancient parish churches in Barberino Val d'Elsa, are the Spedale di San Giorgio, created for hosting the pilgrims, the Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo, a small-scale reproduction of Brunelleschi’s dome in Florence that Santi di Tito realized in 1597 near Petrognano, and the 13th-century Church of San Romolo.
The most interesting castles are Tingano castle, Poppiano castle and Paneretto castle.
