THE CASTLE OF GRIGNANO
The castle of Grignano, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, stood in strategic position close to the bridges crossing the torrents Cerchiaio and Pesa, thus controlling the trades between Panzano and Castellina and between Siena and Florence. Destroyed and re-built several times in the course of the centuries, in the last 40 years the castle has been restored thanks to Raymond Flower, the author of an important historic guide of the Chianti region. The Church of San Giorgio alla Piazza is the only well-preserved historical building in the castle.
THE CASTLE OF RECINE
The castle of Recine, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti, is situated opposite the village of Monteriggioni and close to the old Pieve of San Michele. The Aragonese destroyed the ancient Florentine castle in 1478 and today only some ruins of the walls remain.
