  
Castles in ChiantiThroughout the territory of Chianti there are a lot of castles and fortresses, dating mainly to the medieval period. These impressive buildings have been created to protect the village and its inhabitants from attacks and looting. Their history, however, conceals a vast secular cultural heritage linked mainly to legends and popular beliefs. Even today these buildings fascinate visitors with its mysterious atmosphere and the stories, more or less true, that these sites are linked.
Today the castles and fortresses of Chianti are used for different purposes. In some cases, still belong to noble families that use them as summer residences. In other cases the structures have been converted into farm houses and house museums and exhibitions.
