Gaiole in ChiantiSituated at the foot of the pass that crosses the Monti del Chianti towards the Valley of the Arno and right at the centre of a densely populated area, Gaiole in Chianti has always been an important trade centre of the Siena province. Its origin dates back before 1215.
Although the area is dotted with castles, there is no castle of Gaiole; in fact, in the past Gaiole was no castle town. In the "Carta dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa", issued in 1500, Gaiole is described as a "mercatale" (market town) without city walls and with a large square.
Within easy reach of Gaiole in Chianti lie many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.
The most important medieval villages in the area are Cetamura del Chianti, Vertine, Argennina and Barbischio.
The Abbey of San Lorenzo a Coltibuono, the Pieve of Spaltenna, the Pieve of San Giusto in Salcio, the Pieve of San Polo in Rosso and the Pieve of San Vincenti are worth a visit.
Worth to mention are the wonderful castle of Brolio, the castle of Monteluco di Lecchi, the castle of Montegrossi, the castle of Meleto, the castle of Lucignano, the castle of Cacchiano and the castle of Ama.
