Radda in Chianti

Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena lies along the eastern side of the Chiantigiana - the road that runs through the whole Chianti region - and has been able to maintain its ancient structure better than many other towns and villages in the area.

The Palazzo Podestarile decorated with 51 coats of arms, among which that of Francesco Ferrucci, the Church of San Niccolò and, just outside the city walls, the Franciscan Monastery of Santa Maria in Prato, whose 15th-century church was built on the ruins of a Romanesque oratory, are worth a visit.

In the Middles Ages, Radda was the headquarters of the Lega del Chianti. Its elliptical shape dates back to that time. All the streets of this small town stretch around Piazza Ferrucci, the main square.

Within easy reach of Radda in Chianti lie many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.

Badiaccia di Montemurlo, Monte Rinaldi and Volpaia are the most interesting villages around Radda.

The Monastery of Badia a Passignano, that of Santa Maria al Morrocco and the Church of San Donato in Poggio are worth a visit.

Very interesting are the wonderful castle of Poggio al Vento and that of Poggio Petroio.
