San Casciano Val di PesaAmong the municipalities of the Chianti Classico region, San Casciano Val di Pesa is the closest to Florence and therefore its landscape and architecture have been influenced by the Florentine late Renaissance.
The history of San Casciano is bound to that of its more powerful neighbour. Around 1350 Florence decided to fortify the village with majestic walls, thus transforming San Casciano in a military fortress with defensive purposes. Since it was so close to Florence, many Florentine families chose San Casciano as their "holiday resort" and enriched its territory at first with fortified castles and then with aristocratic villas.
Within easy reach of San Casciano lie many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.
Mercatale Val di Pesa, Fabbrica, Sant’Andrea in Percussina, Romola, Cigliano and Faltignano are the most interesting villages in the neighbourhood of San Casciano.
The Church of Santa Maria del Gesù, the Church of Santa Maria al Prato, the Pieve of San Giovanni in Sugana, the Pieve of San Pancrazio and the Pieve of Santo Stefano a Campoli are worth a visit.
Very interesting are the magnificent castle of Bibbione, the castle of Gabbiano and the castle of Pergolato.
